I. Pray for guidance and wisdom

One way I like to pray is writing in my prayer in a journal. I have a prayer journal that I write in so I can always go back to my prayers and see how God has moved or answered prayers in my life. This is one way of praying is writing your words in a personal journal like an love letter to God.

Another way is praying in a quite place. No phone or distractions, just you and the Lord one-on-one. I used to pray on my way to work in the mornings in my car. I also have two other areas I pray in my home, my office and my guest bedroom. Sometimes it can be challenging at times when you have a active toddler, but even not during my busy motherhood duties I’ll also wait till my home is quite everyone is asleep and just have deep conversations with God.

That’s all prayer is talking to God. I know sometimes we think we have to have the right words to say or don’t know sometimes what to say. But, just come as you are to Him with a heart of praises and thankfulness. Tell him how your day was or how you felt today. Open you heart to him, surrender everything that you are feeling or going through to Him. He hears you and your prayers.

The Psalmist declares, “As for me, I call to God…and he hears my voice.” Psalm 55:16-17

II. Find or Read Scripture

What’s your go to Bible verses? If you have one start there and read that scripture. If you don’t have one what story in the Bible do you enjoy reading or book in the Bible? You can find a scripture that way too. Now you can find a scripture that way and read it.

Highlight your Bible verse. Next dig deeper and study it using the S.O.A.P. method.

III. Use S.O.A.P. Method to study the Bible Verse or Scripture you read

What is the S.O.A.P. method?

The S.O.A.P. method stands for Scripture, Observation, Application, and Prayer.

When you read scripture or a bible verse sometimes the message isn’t clear or the language is too complex to understand. Scripture I believe always requires researching the meaning of the verse(s) by either comparing different versions of the Bible or studying it word from word. We all don’t hear things the same way nor do we receive it the same. So digging deeper by researching the meaning or context of what the Bible verses is important to Bible study.

Observation is when you are observing something to carefully gain information. Remember in school when you were taught the 5W’s to reading? Why, Who, What, When, Where, and sometimes How? This is exactly how you should study the Bible or verse when you read it. Why is this happening? Who are they talking about? What is happening? When did this happen? Where is this taken place? How did this happen? You should know the answer to each so you can gain a better understanding of the story or Bible verse.

So how can you apply this Bible verse to your life? Application is the action of putting something into operation. So, how can this Bible verse relate or apply this Bible verse(s) to your life? So after you read and study the Bible verse you can apply God’s truth to your life.

Prayer is how we talk with God. You cannot have a relationship with God if you are not communicating with him through prayer. Sometimes we say, “but I don’t hear God?” You hear God through is Word — Bible scriptures. In order to have a personal relationship with Him you have to pray. Prayer is a way of awakening the Holy Spirit he has placed in those who believe in Him and want to have a eternal relationship with Him. It doesn’t matter how long you prayer whether it is 10 minutes or 5 minutes. Just a simple talk with God is praying.

Using the S.O.A.P method is a method you can use next time you study the Bible or a bible verse. Please let me know if you think using the S.O.A.P. for Bible study is helpful for you?

IV. What lesson or teaching stood out to you the most?

When you are reading the Bible you should always have an understanding of what you are reading? You should never be left confused or lost. That’s why it’s important to dig deep into your Bible reading and really pin point what the main points are of the story. What is God teaching you from the story? If you don’t know what you are reading or are the lesson then you are going to miss the lesson or purpose behind the Bible verse or story.

God is not a confusing God. He speaks through his word and he is not trying to confuse you. Spiritually you have to surrender your mind and heart to him to hear him. There are so many distractions that can spiritually give us deaf tune to his word. That’s why we have to constantly stay spiritually in tuned and connected with his word.

V. Draw or Illustrate that lesson in your Bible

Now you have chosen a scripture or Bible verses you want to illustrate. Now if you don’t want to start illustrating freehand in your Bible. I advise you to grab a scratch piece of paper and start from there first.

Start sketching out your lettering design or doodles you will use to illustrate the scripture or Bible verses.

Next, once you feel comfortable about your illustration you can either copy it by sight or just place the paper under the page of the margin in your illustrated Bible. It should be clear for you to trace over your sketch under the Bible page.

Then, once your illustration is drawn in the margin of your Bible. You can choose to add color or not. I’ve seen both color or no color illustrations for Bible journaling. Both are beautiful to me.
