Breaking Free from Comparison: Embracing Your Unique Spiritual Journey

Breaking Free from Comparison: Embracing Your Unique Spiritual Journey

Do you struggle with comparing yourself to others or people on social media? I cannot tell you how many times that I've struggled with going on social media and comparing myself with someone else’s work that I don't even know. It's crazy, right! But, it has happened to all of us at least more than once. Why do we compare ourselves with each other? I think we just naturally have a tendency to compare ourselves to others based on our interest or similar and differences we see in each other or admire. It's so easily to fall into comparison when you are on social media. And it's so easy for you subconsciously or even unconsciously think the way someone else is doing something is better than you.

So, how do you break free from comparison?
First, we need to understand of how we perceive ourselves is not the way God see's us. How we learn to see ourselves the way God intended us to see is knowing who we are, children of God. We are created in His image (Genesis 1:27) so we should only be comparing ourselves with God's image and not others. God is the source and the creator of all things. My identity was created by Him and through Him. (Colossians 1:16). When remember to see ourselves through the lens of God and don’t compare ourselves with others. Then, we have a better understanding of our identity is not found in each other people, but in Jesus Christ.
How do you practically stop comparing yourself with others?
When you understand that God created you in His image. You start to apply His word by believing it in your heart.  I have treasured Your word in my heart, so that I may not sin against You. (Psalm 119:11). Think of your heart as a treasure chest. The most valuable thing you could ever own in it is God's Word. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. (Matthew 6:21). For God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart. (1 Samuel 16:7) Let go of judgement, both towards yourself and others. Too often we scroll through social media and compare what our homes, appearance, families, careers, success, what we eat or so on. Let's find joy in how God created each of us individually by grace because we are all different according to His purpose. But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift. (Ephesians 4:7). I remember Tony Evans Urban Life podcast he said, "Unity does not mean uniformity." It means oneness of purpose, but God created us to be unique. Recognize that everyone's spiritual path is different and valid in its own rights. Embrace diversity and celebrate the richness it brings to the spiritual tapestry.
How can you encourage others in their spiritual journeys without inadvertently fostering comparison or competition within the body of Christ?
Encouraging others in their spiritual journeys without fostering comparison or competition within the body of Christ requires a delicate balance of humility, empathy, and genuine support. One approach is to focus on celebrating the diversity of spiritual gifts and experiences within the Christian community. Rather than comparing oneself to others, emphasize the value of each person's unique contribution to the body of Christ. The very reasons I became more engage on social media was to find like minded sister's in Christ who were sharing God's Word. There are friends I've met from different parts of the world who are unique in their own gifts. I've met authors, singers, artist, entrepreneurs, and influencers. Each person I have met I have admire and inspired by their creativity and work ethics. In a social world where we can engage and dialogue with people on social media as if we've known them our whole life, but we never met before. It's amazing how we can have a deeper connection with others, but still be mindful of our unique spiritual journeys. It's beneficial to seek inspiration from others who are further along their spiritual paths. However, use their journeys as a learning experience rather than benchmarks for your own progress. Understanding that there is no 'perfect' spiritual journey. Our spiritual journeys and gifts are unique and different to each others needs. We can rejoice and celebrate our differences because we serve one purpose in unity, our faith in God. “Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are varieties of ministries, and the same Lord. There are varieties of effects, but the same God who works all things in all persons. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, and to another the effecting of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills.” (‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭12‬:‭4‬-‭11‬) We Christians are one body, same Spirit working together for one purpose. Instead of comparing your spiritual milestones with those of others, celebrate your achievements, no matter how small they may seem. Acknowledge your growth and be proud of your journey.
Who inspires you on my spiritual journey, and what can you learn from them without comparison?
“For even as the body is one and yet has many members, and all the members of the body, though they are many, are one body, so also is Christ. For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. For the body is not one member, but many.” (1 Corinthians‬ ‭12‬:‭12‬-‭14‬) There are multiple spiritual gifts, serving one purpose. We aren’t competing with each other’s gifts, but using our gifts to serve the needs of each other in the body of Christ. There is no division in the body, many members and many parts form one body so it is with Christ. God has put each of us where He wants us. There is no competition and no comparison within the body of Christ. Surround yourself with a supportive community that understands and respects your spiritual journey. This could be a group of like-minded individuals, a spiritual mentor, or even an online community. Sharing experiences and supporting each other can provide encouragement and motivation. Look for communities that resonate with your beliefs and values, offering support without judgement or comparison. These are the individuals you want to connect with on your spiritual journey. You can find groups or ministries such as your church or place of work. It doesn't have to be a large community just individuals you can share with but meet the needs of others that gifts are different from yours. You will be surprise with what similarities or common interest you have when you open up with others who share your spiritual journey. These connections can foster a deeper sense of community and support, helping you feel more understood and less isolated on your unique path. Sharing your experiences and listening to others can provide valuable insights and encouragement. Remember, everyone's journey is different, but the bonds formed through shared understanding and empathy can enrich your spiritual growth immensely.
In conclusion, breaking free from comparison is liberating in Jesus Christ because it allows you to fully embrace the unique identity and purpose that God has given you. When you stop measuring your worth against others, you can rest in the assurance of God's unconditional love and grace. This freedom enables you to focus on your personal relationship with Christ, grow in your faith, and live out your calling without the burden of comparison. "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery." (Galatians 5:1). This verse emphasizes that Christ has liberated us, urging believers to embrace this freedom and resist returning to any form of bondage, whether it be legalistic practices, sin, or comparison with others. Recognizing that you are fearfully and wonderfully made, you can celebrate your individuality and trust that God's plan for you is perfect and uniquely tailored to your journey.

Be blessed,
Anetria
